BRAIN: 80-year-old vet starts 2,500-mile e-bike trek

MEDINA, OH - An 80-year-old Korean Ware veteran kicked off a 2,500-mile ride from Washington State to Ohio on June 4 riding an electric bicycle. John Moss, a former resident of Medina County, is an old hand at cross-country cycling but is making his first extended ride on an e-bike. He chose an Easy Motion Neo Jet for the trip and is expected to arrive at the Century Cycles bicycle shop in Medina around Sept. 1. "He's not fast, but he's strong. He'll ride all day long," said Scott Cowan, the owner of Century Cycles. Cowan founded the store with Moss' daughter, Lois, in 1992 and took over ownership when the two divorced. Cowan, who has accompanied Moss on some of his trips, said he wouldn't be surprised if he arrives ahead of schedule. Moss, a former teacher and planning director from Ohio, started cycling when he was 62 and was nearing retirement. He has biked across North America five times, and in 2008 rode from Missoula, Montana, to Anchorage, Alaska. After rehabilitating from an injury, Moss wanted to make one more long-distance ride and decided to do it on an e-bike. He said an electric bike helps him climb hills and mountains, and the Neo Jet is comfortable for distances. In a video made before he started, a reporter from The Oregonian asked Moss why he decided to make the trip, which he expects will be his last. "I just do it because I feel like doing it," he replied.
