Medina Bike To School Night on April 29 will help residents get ready to
bike to school, work or just for fun

Third annual Medina Bike to School Challenge is May 5-16

MEDINA, Ohio – Get your bicycle ready to roll this spring at the Medina Bike To School Night on Tuesday, April 29, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Century Cycles bicycle store. The bike shop is located at 1059 N. Court St in Medina, which is on Route 42 north of downtown in the Marc's shopping plaza. This event is free and open to the public.

Residents are invited to bring their bicycles for a free safety inspection, and learn about the benefits of bicycling.

The Medina Bike To School Night will also help families prepare for the third annual Medina Bike To School Challenge sponsored by Century Cycles on May 5-16, 2014, which strives to inspire over 1,800 students at Root and Claggett Middle Schools to ride their bikes to school as much as possible for two weeks -- to improve their health, help the environment, inspire the community to use a bicycle for short trips around town, have fun and win prizes. It is part of Century Cycles’ Bike to School Challenge, which is the largest and most successful student bicycling program in the United States that engages more than 4,000 middle school and high school students in Northeast Ohio each May.

Last year, Medina’s middle school students biked 14,752 miles during Bike To School Challenge, saving their parents $2,590.64 in gasoline expenditures and the environment 16,227 pounds in carbon dioxide emissions. They also burned a whopping 250,784 calories.

At the Medina Bike To School Night:

• Professional bicycle mechanics at Century Cycles will provide free bicycle safety inspections, display essential bike commuting gear and information.
• Information about the Medina Bike to School Challenge will be available, and any questions about the program will be answered.

Century Cycles (www.centurycycles.com) is teaming up with the Medina middle schools to organize the Bike To School Challenge, along with other sponsors Raleigh Bicycles, Dairy Queen, Subway, Domino’s Pizza, Arby's, and Bike Cleveland. Sponsors provide prizes as ride incentives – the more the students ride their bicycles, the more chances they have to win prizes, including two new Raleigh bicycles per school.

The Medina City Schools (www.medinacityschooldistrict.org) is committed to assisting students in making healthy living choices and understanding the importance of healthy eating and adequate exercise. The district has a number of initiatives that help to foster a culture of healthy living.
