Century Cycles Night Rides on the Towpath Trail:
17th season of free group bicycle rides at night begins April 23

PENINSULA, Ohio (January 5, 2011) - The Towpath Trail is one of the area's most popular bicycling paths by day, yet it looks very different in the moonlight - and sounds very different, too. It's an experience bicyclists can enjoy on Century Cycles Night Rides on the Towpath Trail, now back for their 17th year this spring.

The 2011 season of Century Cycles Night Rides on the Towpath Trail begins on Saturday, April 23, and
runs through October. The rides start at 8 p.m. at the Century Cycles bicycle store in Peninsula (1621
Main Street, on Route 303 next to the Winking Lizard restaurant). They are FREE and no advance
registration is required.

The 2011 schedule has 11 Night Rides, including two themed rides in celebration of commemorative
weeks of importance to area cyclists:

Saturday, April 23
Saturday, May 14: Pajama Party Night Ride for Cleveland Bike Week
Saturday, June 11
Saturday, June 25
Friday, July 8
Saturday, July 23
Friday, August 5
Saturday, August 27
Saturday, September 17
Saturday, October 1
Saturday, October 15: All Hail the Ale Night Ride for Cleveland Beer Week

Led and supported by the bike store's staff, Century Cycles Night Rides on the Towpath Trail are casual, ride-at-your-own pace bicycle rides (not races) about 12-15 miles long that begin and end in the parking lot of the Century Cycles store in Peninsula. Parking is available at the Lock 29 Trailhead, just north of the store. Participants must sign a waiver prior to riding and must have their own bicycle and wear a helmet. A bicycle headlight is also required (the Towpath Trail is unlit at night and very dark). Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. After the Night Ride, cyclists usually head to the Winking Lizard next to the store to recount past adventures on two wheels.

Started in 1994 as a staff ride, Century Cycles Night Rides have grown dramatically in popularity, now regularly attracting over 100 bicyclists and their families who ride everything from mountain bikes to tandem bicycles on the crushed limestone trail. Century Cycles Night Rides were in the national spotlight in 2009 when Bicycling Magazine, the world's #1 bicycling publication, dubbed them one of America's great local rides. In 2010, Bicycling Magazine cited the Towpath Trail as one of the reasons Cleveland is the 39th-best bicycling city in the United States.
