Students logged 37,042 miles during Bay Bike To School Challenge sponsored by Century Cycles and Chipotle

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (June 1, 2009) - Bay Village students in grades 5 through 12 logged 37,042 miles biking to school during Bay Bike To School Challenge sponsored by Century Cycles and Chipotle, which concluded on May 22 with school-wide assemblies at both Bay Middle School and Bay High School. During the assemblies, the success of the three-week program was summarized by school officials and sponsors, who said the students enthusiasm and commitment far exceeded their expectations. Bay Village Mayor Deborah Sutherland also praised the students for making a difference in a city trying to "go green" and she helped award the grand prizes at each assembly.

Totaling up the success of Bay Bike To School Challenge on May 4 through May 22 adds up to some big numbers:

  • 37,042 miles: Total number of miles biked by Bay students to school during the challenge (calculated by daily bike counts and average distance from students' homes to school).
  • 34,149 pounds: Total number of pounds of CO2 emissions estimated was saved by Bay students.
  • 1,215 students: The total number of Bay Village students who registered for Bay Bike To School Challenge (675 at BMS and 540 at BHS).
  • 506 students: The average number of Bay Middle School students who biked to school each day, or 62 per cent of the school.
  • 249 students: The average number of Bay High School students who biked to school each day, or 31 per cent of the school.
  • 90 teachers and administrators: The number of people who made it a "bike to work" challenge at both schools. Bay High School administrators led by Assistant Principal Jason Martin have also formed a school team to do the MS 150, a 150-mile bike ride to Cedar Point and back in August.

At Bay High School, Camille Eckel (a sophomore) won a 2009 Giant bicycle and Brandon Haskett (a senior) won a 2009 Raleigh bicycle, courtesy of sponsor Century Cycles, Giant Bicycles and Raleigh Bicycles. Robin Geiger, a freshman who bicycled 12 of the 15 days of the challenge, won a year's worth of Chipotle burritos from the restaurant sponsor. Tim Altieri, a freshman, won a VANITYLAB Salon gift basket valued at $100 from the Westlake salon, which was a daily sponsor of Bike To School Challenge along with Caribou Coffee, Mitchell's Ice Cream, Knog bicycle lights, and the Parent-Teacher Associations of both schools.

At Bay Middle School, Maddie Tomczak, a 7th grader, won the 2009 Giant bicycle and Paige Carter, also a 7th grader, won the 2009 Raleigh bicycle. Matt Korte, a 5th grader, won free Chipotle burritos for a year.

Bay Middle School also had the distinction of winning the Golden Sprocket Award, a competition between BMS and BHS during Bike To School Challenge to see which school had the greatest percentage of bike-riders on the three Wednesdays of the challenge. In order to be eligible for the Golden Sprocket Award, the schools principals had to bike to school as well. To celebrate the middle school's victory over the high school, McAndrews bicycled through the hallways of the school with the Golden Sprocket Award, to great cheering by the student body.

Back for its second year, Bay Schools Bike To School Challenge sponsored by Century Cycles and Chipotle is organized to help middle and high school students in Bay Village, Ohio, kick the car habit by challenging them to ride their bikes to school during three weeks each spring, to help the environment, get more exercise and improve their health. The event also included a Bicycle Safety Fair, at which over 100 bicycles were inspected, 40 bicycle helmets were given away, and scores of bicycles were registered for bike licenses by the Bay Village Police Department.

Bay Schools and sponsor Century Cycles have already committed to planning a Bay Bike To School Challenge in 2010.
