Where We Ride: Rocky River - Vermilion Voyage

Ken Hagedorn

Ken HagedornKen is an avid road cyclist from the staff of our Rocky River store. He suggested this 30-mile (60 miles round-trip) route as a way to get from Rocky River out to Vermilion, and you can extend it beyond there if you're headed to other points west.

The route mostly follows US Route 6, also known as Lake Road. However, it takes a detour on some back streets to avoid some less bike-friendly sections of Rt 6, taking you through some residential areas of Rocky River and Bay Village. Upon returning to Rt 6, you enjoy either bike lanes, wide shoulders, or sharing wide lanes with cars. Enjoy the Lake Erie views as you pass through Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake, and Lorain.

Beware of the steel grate bridge over the Black River in downtown Lorain--it can be extremely slippery, especially when wet.

Once you reach Vermilion, you can enjoy lunch one of the many local cafes and pubs. Also be sure to check out the galleries and local museums that highlight the area's maritime past. When you're ready to head home, just turn around and go back the same way you came. If you're lucky, the prevailing winds off the lake will be out of the west, to give you a much-need boost on the pedal back.
